The heavy sea on the bar yesterday prevented shipping movements. It is probable that the bar will be workable to-day. The Kowhia is in the roadstead and will enter when the bar moderates. The Alexander leaves Wellington today for Greymouth, via usual ports. The Waverley is due this morning from Wellington via way ports and loads coal for QPicton. The Waipori is at Westport and will come on to Grey as soon as the weather moderates.' TTie Kamona, Flora and Poherua are detained in port owing to the sea on the bar. There is a rumour in' shipping circles to the effect that the Union Steam ship Company is intending to convert their training ship Dartford into a coal hulk, and procure a larger and more modern sailing ship to take her, place as a training school for future mercantile marine officers. In the event of this being decided upon, it is reported that the cadets at present serving their apprenticeship on the Dartford will be transferred for the time being to the company's big steamer Aparima, which is at present in Lyttelton discharging cargo from Calcutta, and which is to proceed shortly to Australia to load wheat for the United Kingdom and Europe. The Union Company, however, deny that there is any foundation, at least in 'the meantime, for the statement. Thf Dartford has just entered on a long charter, and. nothing will be done until the charter expires.
