CONVENT SCHOOL CONCERT

A 'GREAT SUCCESS:

The Convent School Concert, held in *he Town Hall last evening, was 6ne of the most enjoyable Giitertainment given tin. the toivn. io-r years, and rietfleoted the highest credit on the g-ood Sisters of Mercy for the way the children were trained. Apartfrom -being a treait, it showed how well the pupils are educated and fitted to acquit themselves well. The Convent has for years enioyed a reputation for teachiing music, (but last evening the pupils acquitted themselves excellently. ' The programme was a well arranged onei and item after item was encored, -the lamge audience showing their appreciation most enthusiastically. The enterta/inmentl was opened by a s brdigh* and pretty chorus by the pupils entitled "Rinig out Wild Bells." Dueti (two pianos) "Chiperic" by Misses M. Noonan, R. Hannan, C. Baybutt and M- Egan. This to a musical treat and warmly applauded. The Valsettld (three vaoli'ns) by MissesM. Davis, W. O'-Neill, and I. Hannan "■was played with great taste and eix-pressiion.- and was a popular if-pm. The Part Son^ "Charity 1 * .by Misses. E. Hanman, G. Hannam, M. F-lintoiff, and A. Moss was wel rendered, the voices blending well. The action song/Off 'to Reefton" by t'ne little dots drew forth .great applause' and the little ones had toi respond to an encore. The Vocal Solo" "La Serenata," by Miss E. Hannan was the gom of the evening. The singer was In good voice and ithe enthusiastic encore showed htsw 'thoroughly Her singling was erajoyed. Mr F. McCarthy played most sympathetically the (Obligate. The Violin Du&t "The Harp that onc c through Tara's Halls" by Masses Winnie O'Neill and ,Inga Hannam was cleverly rendered. The Part Songs "Hailing Smilang Morn," and "Ye Bamks and Braes," by Misses E. Hannan, G. Hannam,. M. Flinto'ff, A. Moss, C. Hood, N. Chunn, V. Robinson, and I. Burrell was very well received and most pleasant to listen to. The Pianoforte Sato "La'Tileuse" by Miiss Lena Biggins was splendidly played -and brouigh-tl the -first part of the programme to a close. The second part opened with a solo "The Nightless Land," by Miss G. Hanmam, wtfh violin obligate- >by Miss !' ga Hannam. This was a splendid rendation and richly deserved the • encore that followed. The Piamoforta.Solo "Berceuse xru Db,"' by. Miss Vera Robinson was cleverly played and called forth much applause. The pupils then delighted the audience wdth "Fan Philosophy," and Miss Winnie O'Neill rendered mos-ti creditably the violin solo "Valsc Tente." The vocal trio unacoo-mpainiied "Night Loyely Night," by Misses E. Hanoiaai, A. Moss, and V. Robinson was well rendered. T.he Pianoforte. Trio "M''hary March" (two pianos) was excellently rendered by Misses. E. O'Brien, ,M. Thompson, K. Egran, E./ Giieseking, i\ T . Hudd ,amd E. Oliver. The Stately Dance "BeJlemdeini Gavotte, "by eight little 1 girls "was beautifu-1-ly rendered, the little dots doing their Jbest.to exc&ll themselves.. The recitation "Constancy" 1 by Miss Nellia Kilgour was on c of the best items of the evening. The way the little dot' expressed herself . won admiration and sh& was r.ecailled twice. All we can say is "well done pretty little : dot." The duet "V-alse Brillaine" (two pia-n-os ),by Misses E. Green;, G.. Williams, V. Michel, and B. Baxter was nicely j rendered. The next item was an excellent and pleasing one.. Miss Kathleen Hannan sang "What Would* You Do For Us, Papa." This young ,lady could no'ti have doand better. She seems to have had the mantle of her father about her for ability and the audience repeatedly applauded her. The little favourite had to appear -twice jb'efore. the audience were satisfied 'to' let her retire. ."
