GREYMOUTH LAWN TENNIS CLUB.

The annual report to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday next reads as follows :— "Youi! committee haw? much pleasure in presenting their report far the past year which has been one of the busiest in" the .reconds of the Club! In accordance with the resolution passpd at the last annual meeting the ladder system was introduced and the results certainly warnant its continuance. On several occasions handicap matchcis were arranged to.be played off in tho course of one after/noon and they aroused considerable keenness though on one occasion they limited the general play soniewhat

severely. The results in these were: Ladies' Doubles,< Mrs Lawn and Miss Berthelson; Combined Doubles, Miss Smith and Mr Chalk.; Men's doubles Messrs Chalk and Kitchingham. "Mtf Fcrguison Jpre seated :a very handsome silver- mounted hand mirrjor, for competitfom amongst the ladies. The trophy was won by Miss 1 Berthelson, Miss O. Stanford being runner up. ■ "Club championships were revived this year. Miss O. Stanford proving champion with Mass Berth-elson .runner up i n the ladies' division and Mr Chalk champion with Mr Blair runnes up in the men's division.

"The annual home and home matches with Hokitika proved as intostfmg as usual. Both matches were won by the Grey teams hy small margins. During tho season several informal matches wewj played against tho United Club and were very muct enjoyed by . those taking " B "■ team came from Hokitika to meet our "B " team butowing to heavy rain the match could not be played. A Jang» number of ■miombers took part fn theJ West Coast Associations Tournament at B.ok\-. tika during- Easter week • none • of them however were successful in car''iying off any honours. The Tournament has been- allotted to Greymouth this year and it is to be hoped that members will unite in making- it an unqualified success.. "The Club has asrain to thank Sir Arthur Guinness for his continued kindness in allowing Club members the use of his court. The Club, too,wish to congratulate Sir Arthur and Lady Guinness o n the honour cbnfejrred on them. " Following on the discussion at the last annual- meeting with reference to new courts, your committee took the matter into consideration early and obtained a grant from the Borough Council of a portion of the Town Belt near Alexander Street: This ground proving unsuitable however, the Counci granted a piece of land near the King's Gardens, and ultimately a contract was let for lay-: ing oc the three courts. Th© work j is "well forward, • 'although the ; -contracton has been hampered in the delivery of gravel and by unsettled weather. The ■ pavilion has : been • shifted to the new. si*e, and the fences erected, so tha.t nothing 1 now remains but for the asphalt to he' laid; it is expected that the asphalt will set in a couple of months and the courts should be ready for play in December. The original estimate of .£250 for the work has been exceeded, and it will take close upon ,£320 to complete the court. Of this amount .£275 has. been subscribtd by fiftyfive £5 debentures, bearing interest a.t o pe.r cent. . and tho remaiinder will b« paid out of the balance on last year's running of the club and out of subscriptions 'for the current year. The Committee are very pleased at

the comparative ease with which the debentures were disposed of although unsecured, and have to thank the debenture holders who have assisted them materially.

" In view of the large sura now owng by the Club, re-arrangement of

the subscriptions is essential and this matter together with other alterations .of the rules will be. discussed at the annual meeting;

; " Although"" a number of members resigned during" the year -owing : to

their leaving the district, yet close upon twenty others have handed, in their names for memibership, so that

there is no likelihood .of tho number' of acti-v-a" members decreasing. -

"After a laipse of several -years the Club held ia lball> which was attended by a very large number of dancers and euchre players arid was- altogether highly successful. The ladies also organised two dances, which

were held in the United Pavilion and proved both profitable and enjoyable. The Club cannot thank the ladies too much fo:<! the a-rduous work they have done in organising and helping at the three dances and- an providing rcfreishmejits at the courts."
