A WRINKLE TO FRUIT GROWERS

(By Telegraph — Per Press Association) HASTINGS, May 12. Writing to The Tribune re he "bitter pit," F. E. Nottage, Inspector of Orchards in Hawke's Bay, mentions two facts which appear on the surface largely to discount the value of the theory advanced by Mr. Dr. Jean White, and Prof. Ewart, of Melbourne University. They are: — (1) In Western Australia, where codlin moth is unknown .and arsenical spraying was never resorted to, bitter pit is alarmingly prevalent and occasions great loss to fruit growers every year. (2) In his travels around the orchards of the Dominion during the past four years he frequently noticed bitter pit on trees which never had been sprayed for the contrpl of codlin moth or other pest. Mr Nottage is a practical grower of many years' experience.
