' OLD MEN'S HOME. , 1 have considered the matter of the Old Men's Home and have discussed it with the Matron and have come to the conclusion ,that the arrangements had better be left as they are for the present. . " ' • Until there is united action on the part of the various West Coast Boards there cannot be any more economical method of housing; the old men of this district than that whifch at present obtains. , The only alternative that I can suggest -would be in having a married coupler in -charge of the old Portion of the hospital, but it i»s not only 'difficult to find suitable persons but accommodation would have to be provided and the salaries would be considerably larger than those now beingpaid. We have the honour to state that we visited the Hospital on the sth inst., and beg to report as follows: — 1. The iron fence in front of the institution is nearly completed, and the iron gates at entrance are placed in position. The contract for paintng the outer walls is also nearly completted, -and the painting of the" roof is in progress. 2. We recommend that a timber shed at back of cottage in garden be newly floored .and a urinal erected in corner of garden. 3. We (find that the gas service in ■the new building is very defective, the pipes being too small to supply the quantity of gas required. This was realised by the Trustees of the late Board before going out of office. The [•gas manager estimates the cost of renewing .the pipes, "and supplying- an additional meter approximately at £50. We recommend that tne work be put in hand. 4. We instructed the Med;cal Superintendent to allow the services of Mr Mannix, the gardener, to' .top dress their .green, the Club agreeing 1 to pay a substitute. The report was adopted. • It was decided to appoint Miss Shine as a probationer, and that the matron be asked to keep a list of applicants. CONDOLENCE.
