DR. HOCKEN
Dr. Hocken, who has been intimately associated A\-itH the progress of Dunedin tor nearly haW a century, died to-night, at the age of seventy-four. He ha& been in- ill-health for several months, and his condition more or less critical for some weeks. 'He settled in Dunedin in 1862. In addition to filling the position of coroner .for itwentyMtHvo years, h© acted as surgeon for a number of public institutions for many years, and was the first lecturer on surgery at Otago Univetrfeity. In 1883 he wad appointed a life member of the University Council, and on the retirement of Mr Justice Williams from the OTiancellorchip this year, Dr. Socken succeeded Mt J&mes Allen, as Vice. Chancellor. He took very keen interest in the early History of 'New Zealand, and went to a great deal of^ expense to collect maps, manuscripts, plans, paper&> etc., relating to the early days. These he recently presented to the peope of the Dominion The Hocken wing, in which they are housed, was recency opened by Lord - V'-ket. akoiMMfr!
