BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Grey Borough Council was held last evem.ijj:. 1 .resent—The Mayor (Mr Coates), chair, Crs. Sheedy, Jackson, Shannahan, Kettle, Russell, Lynch, Tennent ~Bignell and Kerr. ' GENERAL. Mr G. E. Groom wrote stating that the steps 'eading to Easson's Hill were in a dangerous state, and asking permission .to remove them. Cr. Shannahan moved and Cr.-Jack-son seconded that .the request be granted. T\he steps were rotten and should be removed. Carried. Mr T. Barry wrote asking for a refund of £4 17s 6d paid by his son for drainage work. The council had charged too much for the work, and it was 4 eight years ago. Mr Lord stated 'that the charge was too high. Cr. Tennent moved and Cr. Lynch seconded that i>he matter be referred to the Finance Committee.Cr. Kerr asked who made the charges in the first place if they were coo high. He understood .there were ab out of drainage accounts disputed. He thought a list should be sup« plieo showing how many were in a similar position to Mr Barry. Cr. Sheedy said it was a serious matter for the Council. They should get to' the bottom of the matter. Cr. Tennent stated that the drainage accounts outstanding amounted to about .£1235. Thi motion was carried. The Heathcote Road Board refused to purchase the stone crusher wagon. Cr. Shannahan moved that a shed be erected to house the wagon. Cr Jackson seconded. Cr Lynch supported and stated that a shed should be built suitable for housing the wagon, and storing tools nails, etc. Cr. Sheedy moved an amendment and Cr. Kettle seconded that the matter -be referred to the Works Committee. •Cr. Shannahan stated that if they could not trust their engineer to build a shed they 'should get rid of him. . Cr. Bignell held that it was throwing money away to spend .£lO on a shed. The wagon was no good to the council and .they should get rid of it. The amendment was put and carried on division— For : Crs Kerr, BigneH Russell, Kettle. Sheedy. Against: Crs Lynch, Tennent, Shannahan and Jackson. The Grey Harbor Board wrote asking the council to appoint delegates .to confer over the Teremakau-Orang'tpu-ku danger. Cr. Tennent moved that the Mayor and engineer be appointed delegates. Cr. Jackson seconded. Cr Sheedv said he did not think tneie was any danger ahead. Cr Kerr suggested that the delegates be instructed to oppose th e paying by he council of any of .the cost, and is 1 bein& co^ ructed The Mayor stated that he airreea .wuh Cr. jKerr. Referred to the Finance Commit*ec. Mr M. Newsome wrote offering £s for an old cart. On the motion oi the Mayor and Cr. Jackson the offer was accepted. Mr John Neilon, sanitary contraotoi , wrote asking for an increase in price. Referred to the Works and Finance Committees for report. The Grey Education Board and Rev Dean Carew wrote asking- for free water for the schools. On .the motion of Crs. Tennent and Lynch the matter was referred to the Water committee. The Public Trustee wrote asking for a refund of -the. rent paid by Mr Eas-t---erbrook for rent of Town Hall. Cr. Kerr moved that as the unfortunate man was in the asylum and having no relatives no action be taken-/ Cr. Shannahan seconded. Carried. Naylor and McKay wrote stating that sheep had been killed by dogs in th<*. abattoir paddocks. Referred to (the Abattoir cmomittee for report.
