PERSONAL ITEMS.
Very Rev. Dean Carew is expected to arrive home from Ohristchuroh tomorrow evening. Mr and Mrs P. Bellett left by the Arahura for a month's hojiday trip to Dunedin. It is rumoured about town that Mr John Jackson^ secretary of the Wharf Laborers' Union, will be a candidate for the Grey seat at the next election. Mr Petrie is also likely to again come forward. The following passengers arrived from Christchurch last, evening: — W. L. Logic, Kissell, Tomkins, Johnsone C. H. Flack, Marks, Thompson, Ken nedy, Budd, Davis, Kerr, T. G. Newown, Price, Moore, Dr. Kennedy. Mes dame s Devine, Chirm, Piper and son, Kane; Messrs Fortbes, Masters, Hughes and Ashley. Master Osweld Ferens, of the National Bank, and son of our worthy townsman, Mr George Ferens, has received well deserved promotion, and leaves in a few days to take up the duties of ledger keeper at Tapanui, Central Otago. iMr Ferens is a most competent and careful officer and we congratulate him on his promotion and wish him every success. Captain Bentinek of H.M.S. Pronetheus arrived from Reafton last evening, and is staying at Revington's Hotel. Other officers of the battleship will probably arrive in town on Friday evening. The party intend to inspect the coal mines in this district. Health Inspector E. Middleton, M. R. 5.1., A.1.5.E., is at present on an_ official visit to Greymouth and district.
