ROBBING A DEAF MUTE

WELLINGTON., Feb 4. At the Supreme Court to-day Archibald MoNab was convicted of stealing £1:15 from a deaf mvt c named David Sutherland. Sutherland fiad been, imprisoned for one month for habitual drunkenness. When taken to gaol he had a considerable sum of money, which was paid by the authorities into the Public Trust account. When Suth erland left the gaol 'the gaoler returned the money. Sutherland began to celebrate his .release by getting intoxicated, and wa"s known to cash a cheque for .£lls, receiving the money chiefly in- ;£2o notes. On June 18th Sutherland's dead body was found in Wellington harbour. The only' cash in the pockets of his clothes was one penny It was not suggested by the Crown that McNab was concerned in any way with Sutherland's death, but that he rdbbed Sutherland of his money and shared it with others to keep them quiet. Prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months' haTd labor.
