He gave a number of instances wherein employees i had commenced with the firm in a Very humWe way, and by their ability and close application to work-had risen until their salaries now ran into thousands a year. In one of these cases the successful ...man .came .to -the .firm iwihen-. he. was a small boy' and his first duties'were picking up scrap paper and storting- of string. Mr Hordern said that the growth of the business had not been due to his efforts alone, but also to those who had been as.tfjociated with Mm. He then gave an Recount of his bonus system, and remarked that at Christmas time he disitributed j£25,0c0 amongst the heads of departments. Every employee, too, in addition to has or her salary, was given a. commission of one penny in the pound on sales. He remarked •■that,;if ••the Court granted the Shop Assistants Union's cladm in regard to ,a. minimum waige; it -woiild kill the pnalj man. " He had. been a ' 'small £aan', himself and he knew/ The mil--lidnaire universal provided then rela't,od .how ( in the olden Says he used to -serve 'behind the counter, give change," do his own shopwalking, and manage the .business generally. In those days he had an employee to whom he gave £2 a week" and "the man was well satisfied with it. "But," added Mr Hordern witJi a s-nile, "it troubled me a trifle at the time because it was more than I could afford to pay."
