The Coming Races.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir. — "A word in season" — Would you kindly publish tho following extract from the Melbourne "Leader" of December jst, as apart from its humour it is peculiarly applicable to Racing Clubs not a hundred miles away and might be taken as a lesson by those whom it may concern, and on the eve of the racing carnival it is particularly appropriate. "Tho V.R.C. committee, at its last meeting, placed on record instructions to stewards to hold inquiries when they "see" anything wrong occur in a race, even though no complaint may be made. Acting quite seriously in thp matter, the V. R. C. committeemen probably failed to see the humor of what they were doing. By what stretch of imagination could one imagine stewards "seeing" anything, and how could the V.R.C. committee expect that valuable time, which might bo devoted to finding out how many triers there would be in tho next race, could be wasted over an in quiry into something that happened ; n the previous one.? — I am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Reefton, December 14, 1904. ■
