An Explanation.
TO THE EDITORDear Sir,—ln your issue of 16th inst. D. W. Robertson of Reefton made an unwarranted attack on my committee for "Apparently altering the Judge's decision." It is remarkable the high standard that some of our exhibitors expect us to attain in the management of the Show, as well as the distinguished promptitnde and attention they expect a number of honorary officers to give them. The facts are these: — D. W. Robertson wrote complaining that an award had been given J. Robertson instead of himself in the tandem driving competition. His letter reached me on Thursday, and was brought before the Committee meeting on Monday, and the following reply sent on Tuesday: — Greymouth, Dec. 13th, 1904. D. W. Robertson, Eaq., Rdefton. Your letter to hand re Tandem Driving award. We fear there has been *\ mistake; I hope to be up at Reefton this week and will rectify matters. Mr J. Robertson must surely have been aware of the mistake. —rYours Faithfully, J. B. MERRETT, Secretary. It appears in receiving the awards from the class Steward the name of J. Robertson gob the award instead of D. W. Robertson; both competed. Naturally the- prize was sent to the wrong Robertson, a very natural sequence in the complication of names. Then before D. W. Robertson would wait for an explanation he pens his letter to the "Argus" and falsely accuses the Committee of altering the Judge's award when they had nothing whatever to do with it. He also complains of scant courtesy because he was not more promptly attended to. No doubt Mr Robertson's self assumed importance sbould have received greater deference, and if in his one complaint he imagines it will do us harm next year there are dozens of testimonials of praise and satisfaction at the way we conducted our Show. If it were not that other members might convict me of negligience in my correspondence I should not have troubled to reply to these objections. — Tours, etc., J. B. MERRETT, Secretary W. C. A. and P. A. Greymouth,l6th,l9o4.
