KOKIRI NOTES.

(From our Correspondent.) A meetiug of the Kokiri Borough Council was held in the Kokiri Town Hall, on the 22ud January. Mr F Stump, the Mayor, occupied the chair. There were also present Councillors T Silverwood, W Silvcrwood, G Brown and S Tands. The minutes of the last meeting, which was on the 4th June, 1902, were read and confirmed. The Mayor then stated that the chief business was to deal with the extensions to Kokiri Town Sail. He stated that L2OO had been voted by Government for that purpose, but that they did not evidently intend to let the Council have any say whatever iv the matter, as they had called tenders for the work themselves. Cr Brown said he thought they had been treated rather shabbily in not having been allowed to have a say in the matter, after the hard manner in which they had been workiug during the past year (most of the members by the way, had been asleep most of the time) and thought the Council should protest strongly against the action of the Government. Eventually it was decided to let the matter stand over till next meeting, which will be held early next May. The matter of a grant for the Hall at the other end of the town, then came up. Cr T Silvcrwood said he thought they should have got at least pound for pound subsidy for this work. He said it would I be nearly 1? miles from the other Hall, and he did not see why they should haveto build it out of their own pockets, the only condition being if they did so the Government would produce a caretaker. Cr Tands said the distance between the two halls would be so short that he did 1 uot see why the Kokiri Town Hall should not suit all purposes, especially as it was to be enlarged soon. He then moved that no further action be taken in the matter. The Mayor seconded the motion, which was carried, Crs T aud W Silverw ood votiug against it. The Mayor then moved that the following notice be placed where the Kokiri Borough joins the Brunner Borough, Daugerous to cyclists.— The road through the borough has been recently repaired and re-mettled and cyclists arc warned from venturing within its limits. The Council would not be responsible for any broken machines of cyclists who do not heed this notice, nor for the arms or j legs ot any venturous cyclists. By order. [ This motion was seconded by Cr Brown | and carried. Cr Tands wanted to know how long the metal was guaranteed to last. The Mayor said he thought it was about a hundred years, some of the metal might go through a six inch clastic ring with a squeeze. This concluded the meeting. The sawmilling trade appears to have been a little brisker since the commence ment of the year, although the weather for the first week or so was rather wet for bush work. A change in the management of one of the mills here has taken place. Messrs Koberts ancl Co's mill at Baxter's siding has been taken over hy Messrs T Saunders and D Watson. The month of January has witnessed the arrival of a couple of brides in Kokiri. At the beginning of the year Mr W. Cunningham arrived from the South with his bride, and about a week later Mr and Mrs W Ryan, who were married at the beginning of December, arrived home after spending about three weeks iv Wellington and Christchurch. The Maori Gully dredge has gone over to one side, and duriug therecent freshes in the creek the dam became silled up so that she now lies in a partly buried state.
