A meeting of the Council was hald last evening. Present — Hh Worship the Mayor (chair), Ors Gieseking. Steer, M'Lean, Joyce, Petrie, Ashton. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE From Goneral Babington thanking the Couacil for the donation of L3l towards the Veterans' Home. Received. From Mr Haanan, 'borough solicitor, in Wediagton, stating that he was likely to succeed w.th the po>nt in dispute over the loan. Received. From Mr J W Easson asking the Ceuncil to ome to tome arrangement a3 regards the purchase of his property ©n Eassan's Hill. It was now five months since the Borough took over the property. The Borouih selieiior informed the Gouncil that the question would be gazetted on Thursday ; after that date Mr Easson could make his claim. The Mayor said he thought the matter would have to be decided by arbitration. Cr Petrie moved and Cr M'Lean seconded that the Mayor, Crs Steer and Petrie confer with Mr Eassoa to see if an amicable arrangement could be come to. Carried From the Railway Departmant agreeing to pay half the cost of filling in culvert aud forming footpath to Elmer Lane. Received. From the Treasury Department forwarding L2OO, being amount allowed for Coronation celebrations. Received. Fr»m the Department of Agriculture asking the Council to refund fees collecied for meac inspection, as the work was done by the Government Inspector. JReselved that the Department be notified that the inspection work is done by the Borough inspector, and not by tho Government inspector. The Finance Committee report was read and adopted. The sum of L 2 4s was allowed Mr East for a new fence and LSO to Mr Young for Town Hall plan inspection. TOWN SURVEYOR'S REPORT. " The sanitary contract expires on the 31sb of this month and provision mu*t bo made for this year. Cr Steer presented a petition from the residents of Blaketown, asking that the spoil obtained from dredging by the Harbor Board be dep >sited in Rlaketown, and there oy filling in tbe lagoon and forming streets. Cr Steer moved that tho Harbor Board be asked to assist with the work. Cr McLean seconded. Carried. Cr Ashton asked why the lamp had not ben a erected in Masters Street. Resolved that the lamp be erected at once, it. being overlooked. Petition re forming streets in Blaketown ar.d erecting lamps. Referred to Works Committee. Petition from residents Lombard Sbraet, asking to have the footpath asphalted. Referred to the Works Committee. Cr Petrie said the Council should remember that the finances would not stand a very great strain. Petition from re^-idents Shakespeare sti eet asking for repairs to road and thi cc lamps. Cr Gieseking said the road was in a j bad state and there wete no lamps in j the vicinity. J The Engineer sfated that men were n*>w repairing the road. In a large work like this it was impossible to arrive at a correct estimate. The Mayor thought the suggestion of Mr Lord should bo given some consideration. Cr M'Lean was against having any conference with contractors. Let the Engineer make his alterations and call for fresh tenders. Cr Joyce saia he would nev.fr forgive himself if he voted for allowing the Engineer and contractor to confer. Call fresh tenders on the modified plan. Cr Steer said the matter should be held over till next meeting, and in. the meantime Mr Lord to produce his modified plan. He moved in this direction, Cr Ashton seconded.
