SHOCKING DOMESTIC OUTRAGE.
A wife fairly hacked with a knife.
[JKER .KRESS ASSOCIATION.'}
Wellington April 24. Further particulars of the assault made at Elthsim by John Dames on his wife showed that one attack was made with a knife, there being terrible gashes on the side of the woman's face down into the neck ; but the face is also bruised and broken in a way which leads to the supposition that sho was also struck with a blunt instrument. There are several stabs on the face nnii ns far down as the breast, so that the assailant must have kept at hia work fer some time,
Dames, who is ' a very dark man, speaks in a broken sort of way. He has been about Eltham district for some years. It is understood that he and his wife did not live on the best of terms, and evidently there has been a quarrel on Thursday, but of this no particulars are available. Though the woman is still alive, she is in a precarious condition. There is a family, but several members are grown up. In her depositions Mrs Dames charged her husband (who has been arrested) with the assault.
