A SHOOTING CASE.

Dunedin, December 29.

Sam Mercer, a well known horse trainer, was arrested this afternoon on a oharge of shooting with intent a man named Edward Brown. The affair appears to have firat started at the Tahuna Park trotting meeting. A Mrs brown, who keeps a confectioner's shop, charged Mercer with enticing her daughter away and atruok him on the nose with her umbrella. She was ejeoted from the coarse. Shortly afterwards the daughter-in-law of Mrs Brown attacked Mercer with her fiats, and she also was ejected. Mercer, who had a young lad; in his dog cart, said to be Mrs Brown's daughter, then drove away and was hooted by the crowd. Edward Brown, a son of tbe firat woman who attacked | M«roer, and the husband of the second, then left the coarse and went to Mercer's house, accompanied by a man named Clifford. The door was opened by Mercer and the men started fightiog in the passage Mercer slipped into the bedroom and procured a Bmall revolver, almost a toy, and It 1b alleged Bhofc Brown In the head. Clifford meanwhile had gone for the police, and on returning both Brown and Mercer were brought to town. Meroer was locked np and Br own taken to the hospital, where it ras found that he had three wounds In the head, one In the temple, one at the back of his head, pro* bably where the bullet came out, and one behtnd the ear. Brown, who bled a lot, ia to be operated upon, and until that is over nothing can be said as to hla condition. The affair took place in the presence of Mercer's adopted daughter. Late*. On examination at the Hospital of Edward Brown, alleged to have been shot by S. J. Meroer, two punctures of the aoalp were found, one probably a bnllet wound. The punctures were not of the same size. The dootor did not observe any wound behind the ear. This may probably bave been a bruise. Brown's condition is sot considered to be aerioaa. Mercer la said to have admitted Btrlktng Brown with a revolver about the head. Mercer Is a J.P.
