THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 1891.

: Mr John Mitchell met with an aooldent on Friday last by which he lost a horse and buggy. The Inangahua Herald of Saturday says — "A Berious accident occurred to Mr John Mitchell and Mr M. Levy yesterday, while driving to the Cumberland machine Bile. It is needless to state .that the road, such as it is, is dangerons. The vehicle went over a Bldeling, and was completely smashed, while the horse was killed. Fortunately the occupants of the trap escaped without any serious injury." From another Bonroe we learn that Mr Mitchell met with the accident at the junction of the Inangahaa and Rainy Creek while driving into Beefton, Mr M. Levy being with him. It appears that Mr Mitchell was making his way along a sandy sideling on the bank of the river when. the horse plunged into a quicksand. Mr Mitchell at once seeing the danger, took Mr Levy on his back and carried him to a log for safety. On. going back to try to extricate the horse and vehicle the horse was found to have sunk up to his head. Mr Mitchell did all he possibly could to get both out, and at great risk to himself ; but all his efforts were in vain. The horse and vehicle gradually went down nntil they disappeared altogether into a pool with about 20ft of water. Next day an effort :was madia to drag the pool In the hope of recovering the vehicle, but nothing was hooked, and the attempt was given up. It was noticed by a great many that the frost on Friday night last »nd on Saturday morning was the severest known ;in this part during the past winter ; but the ;exact difference was not known. One of our fellow townsmen, however, who habitually observes the thermometer, says i that on Saturday morning last, at 7 o'clock, the oold was ; seven degrees greater than at any time during the late long spell of bold weather, much colder in fact than has. been. seen in Greymouth . for; many years. .'.■":' ..".■'..;.'..' It Is a pleasure to notice youthful cleverness with a word of encouragement. Mr Adams, head teacher of our ettate school, showed us on Saturday a large illuminated card containing the names of the members of the education board; of the school staff, and ot the sohool committee, all nicely arranged in separate columns tastefully engrossed. The whole of It is the" -work" of Master Edwin Apted, a lad of 16, who Is to be complimented on the excellence of his •work. He evidently possesses more than ordinary ability in the way of engrossing and ornamental writing, that with a little more praotlce he might some day be able to turn to profitable account. Mr Adams has at the sohool another sample of this youngster's skill with the pen, that he says 1b quite, equal to that under notice. j Tfte young: gentleman la already wellkriWn as an extremely olever violinist, so that' altogether he is of a decided artistic turn., '■; '-;; r ;'■ ' , ; : W. : (- \ Mark Sprot and Co will Bell at Preston road to-day, a number of fat cattle and aheep. The total increase for 12 months is 21 million pounds. A cyclone 100 yards wide passed over the northern portion of Audrain County, Missouri, on May 21, and tore many residences to pieoeß. Three persons were killed and many injured. One man was carried on the wings of the wind half a mile, and lodged In a tree. The Public Trust Commissioners have sent In a nice little bill. Ten pounds a day, and for about seventy-five days, is not bad. They could well afford to throw occasional jokes into their report when paid for at that rate.
