DESTRUCTIVE GALES IN NEWFOUNDLAND.

Halifax, Dec. 8. Mail advices from St. John's, Newfoundland, brings details of the recent terrible storm which caused great and ■widespread devastation. One vessel reports that she saw a French brig and a English schooner driven ashore at Barn's Bay. The Marie, Hannah, and Printer, three schooners laden with dry gaods, "were ashore at St. Pierre/ At Harbor Main, Newfoundland, 400 ft. of the leading street had been washed away, and the ruins were piled up on every side. At Spaniards Bay the schooner Hope dragged her anchors and was dashed to pieces. Miles of highway were badly wrecked. At Salmon Cove the schooner Active, of Labrador, was lost, and a valuable cargo of fish and oil, and there great destruction of wharves and boats. At Tode's Cove a coasting schooner was dashed to pieces. The settlement at Cape Broyl was nearly ruined, and most of it was under water. The beach was swept away, many houses fell in, and the stages ■were carried out of the harbor. At Placentia a fish schooner ran ashore and became a total wreck. The wreck and ruin at Conception Bay •were terrible and unprecedented. At Heart's Content a schooner was wrecked. The streets were strewn with debris. At Carbonear six schooners were stranded. At Harbour Grace the damage was incalculable. Two brigantines and many schooners were damaged through the ships staking against the wharves. The streets were filled with the relics of the destruction. At Spaniards Bay the Church of England school was laid in ruins, many stores were unroofed, and families deserted their homes for fear of further havoc. At Oilton a dwelling was unroofted and the building was carried a distance of 12ft from its foundation.
