A large number of mining exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition from the Thames, Karangahape, Te Aroha, Maretoto, Whangamata, Waitekurl, and Walhi claims were received in Auckland to-day. They are splendid specimens and very rich both in gold and Bilver. The principal Bupply is from 'he Thames and Te Aroha. Noble and James Stoddart, alias Stewart, were charged at the Supreme Court to-day with stealing £117 from P. Brodie, landlord of the Naval and Family Hotel. Porter, bank clerk formerly in the employ of the Colonial Bank at Cambridge, and who was arrested at Napier pleaded guilty to embezz'ing Bums amounting to £120 10s and was sentenced to three years' penal servitude. James Skinner Gordon, charged with forging the name of Alexander Murdoch to a cheqne for £12 ard uttering the same, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two years' hard labor. Robert Mahone, H«nry Munro, and Thomas Knight were charged with the larceny of a watch from the person of Alexander Marshall. The watch was taken from the owner in open day in one of the principle ttre^ts of the town. The jury found only Mahone guilty. Wbuington, .September 4. Mr M'Callum, who was engaged by Government to give instructions to those engaged in dairy industries, has been compelled, owing to ill health, to give up the undertaking. At a meeting in connection with the proposed institute of surveyors, thirty delega'es from all parts of the colony were present, and the meeting was presided over by Mr J. C. M'Kerrow, Surveyor Genera?. The proposed rules which had been drafted by the committee appointed for that purpose w-re read, and after discussion approved. The society was then formally incorporated with nearly 300 members. Wellington, September 5. At the inquest held this morning on the body of Florence Cromley, found in the harbor yesterday, the verdict waa "found drowned." A woman named Cane gave evidence to the effect that on Monday, about seven in the evening, she saw a man fall over the embankment at the back of the Opera House, but could not say whether he, fell into the water. She was too terrified to give the alarm. The coroner severely censured the woman for her conduct. Gisbokne, September 5. The jury found a verdict of guilty against John Baldwin for libel (three counts), and the accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. x.The case against Flora Baldwin has "Been withdrawn. A Chinaman, Lee Mon Sing, was found hanging in a room in a store in Stafford street this afternoon, and is supposed to have committed suicide. He was a miner, and had come from Gore on the previous day. He had been out for a walk with his brother at 3 o'clock, and then went to his room to have a sleep, but an hour afterwards he was found hanging from the ceiling, and life "was extinct.
