THE EVIDENCE.

Later. Miss Emma Bury's statement ia as follows :— I am a cousin of Mrs Loft's, and reside in the North-East Valley. I have done so for the last six months. At a little before 11 o'clock to-day I left home with Mr and Mrs Loft ; we went to his farm near the reservoir, where we walkei about and were gathering flowers. VTr Loft left us in the bush and went to put some cows out of the garden. He returned in about 10 or 15 minutes, and we all went into the farmhouse, Mrs Loft fixing some flowers, and she asked deceased " What do you want to drink today for ? " He immediately put his hand into hiß coat pocket, pulled out a revolver, and fired two shots at her, saying "take that," or words to that effect Mrs Loft tried to get out of a window, and could not. I ran out of the door and across the paddock, he pursuing me. He threw ma down and caught me by the throat, and tried to choke me. The last thing I remember seeing was Mr and Mrs Loft sitting down near the road. Mrs Loft said "I am not long for this world." I aaid " I will get some water." I observed blood on her hand, and she was leaning against the bank. He said "I will go with you, but you will go to the drain opposite." He gave me his hat to fetch the water. I ran and made for the first house, Reynolds, and told the people in the house what had happened. Three men came out of the house, and took Mrs Loft to the farm house. I did not see Loft afterwards.
