[united press association.]

Wellington, October 10. Major-Genial Sir Geo. Whitmore has intimated to the Government his willingness to continue without salary his present position of Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces. Sir George, it is understood, is seeking legal advice whether, if his offer is accepted, he will be in a position to resume his seat as a member of the Legislative Council. [ Sir Robert and Lady Stout left for Dunedin by the steamer Rotomahana this afternoon. Sir Robert was accompanied to the steamer by a large number of members of both branches of the Legislature. Hokitika, October 10. The declaration of the poll to-day was a very tame affair. The result wa3 received in si'enc?, and the candidates were only applauded by supporters. Bevan, the defeated candidate, said that the Westland County Council had been employed as a huge electioneering machine, and the officials, engineers, and overseers were simply electioneering agents. He had verified this when visiting the southern portion of the district. There was a large meeting at Kumara to-night to urge on the Government to proclaim the Arahura and Teremakan rivers watercourses for the deposit of tailings. Tf this is not done mining wi'l be stopped.
