FIJI NEWS

(UXIXED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Auckland, October 6.

Late news from Fiji states that the steamer Lubecki arrived at Tonga from Samoa on Sept. 22, and reports that the German squadron is still at Samoa, numbering six vessels, two others having joined the original squadron. Malietoa surrendered himaelf to the German fomijjaodore by the request of the English and American residents to save bloodshed, which would otherwise have ensued. The group is placed under a protectorate with Tamesese as nominal King under the German Consul. The general feeling in Fiji is one of indignation and the conviction that the English prestage has been further lowered in the South Pacific by allowiog the German Empire to practically annex the group.
