. Sydney, January 4. The military authorities are actively ' engaged in carrying out the defence reoom* mendations of the late Sir Peter Scratchley and Sir William Jervois. Two 12 ton guns were recently mounted at Newoastle, and others of the same dimensions are expected to arrive shortly. The revenue returns issued to-day show a deficiency of £745,200 on the estimated revenue for the year, but three or four" hundred thousand of this amount is due as arrears of pastoral leases. The deficit at the end of the financial year will amount to two and a half-millions. The greatest falling off ism land sales and railway re. ceipts. . J
