A DISHONEST CONTRACTOR.
Some excitement has been caused in commercial circleß by the publication in the Otago Daily Times of an article charging Mercer Bros., contractors for grocery supplies to the Benevolent Institution, with systematically giving short weights to outdoor relief cases. It is alleged that their overcharges ranged from 50 to 107 per cent. In one test case in which the goods were sent to the office of the trustees, on being weighed there, it was found that the value was 5s 7d, while 7s 7d was charged. ALLEGED ARSON. At the City Court to-day Mary Jane Dougherty was charged with setting fire to the house of Louis Thompson at Hillside, on the 28th ult., and Louis Thompson was charged with abetting her.
