BOROUGH COUNCIL,

A meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Peroiti, Lahman, Ashton,. Cameron, s heedy, Griffen, Campbell, Barkley, and Blackmore. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, The outward and inward correspondence was read and approved. Some discussion ensued as to who was responsible for the state of the crossing at the quarry. Ultimately, on the motion of the Chairman, it was resolved- that the clerk be instructed to take legal advice on the matter, and empowered to take.legal proceedings against any persons held to be responsible for the condition of the crossing. — Seconded by Cr Lahman and carried. Letters from the Charitable Aid Board were read and received. Correspondence in regard to strengthening Cobden bridgn was read. Letter from the Adelaide Municipal Council in relation to giving his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales a loyal and hearty welcome at the Jubilee Exhibition of South Australia. • A letter from J. G. Thomas called attention to the state of Moss street.- 1 — Referred to the Public Works Committee. Letter from E. W. Martin, District Engineer, expressing regret that the Council disagreed with his advice in respect to painting Cobden bridge. — Received. Letter from the Secretary ; 'of the Fire Brigade stating that the stand pipe near Mr Kennedy's residence was perfectly "useless. — Received and referred to the Public Works Committee with power to act. . Cr Cameron read the report from the Public Works Committee. The various clauses were considered seriatim. Considerable discussion ensued in regard to the gravel contract, the difference of opinion turning as to whether •the work of gravellihg High street further south should be given to the contractor for gravel, or whether fresh tenders should be called, for the work.— Crs Lahman and' Bafkley " ebhtended that under the Act tenders should be called. — Crs Cameron, Blackmore, Sheedy, Ashton, ' asd Griffen advocated giving the job to ■ the gravel contractor. The. clause was adopted on'a division by 7 to- 2. The report hs a whole wa3 then adopted. Tho repoH of the Inspector of Nuisance* was road and received. The report of the special committee appointed to inquire into the expenditure

required for the year for the maintenance, of streets, roads,! footbaths, culverts, drains, bridges, and water supply for the extension of fires, &c, was read and, adopted. Notice of motion was agread upon that a rate of Is in the pound should be moved at next meeting of Council.
