STATE SCHOOL HALF-HOLIDAY.
[to the editor.] Sir, — 1 agree with the old maxim that " all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," but surely this cannot be applied to the boys or girls attending the State School. Four and a half hours five days in the week, deducting half an hour for play, cannot be severe work f» the children. If it is, give them an extra half hour each day on the school grounds. The school is closed Unfortunately too,
often from causes over which the Com». -mittee and teachers have no control, and it would therefore be unwise to voluntarily close the school one afternoon in the week on the pretext of giving the children a half-holiday. The good sense of the Cooimittee'will, I trust, prevent the school' being closed until they have • ascertained the wishes of the parents, who ought, ,to..hay.e,.,some>..say > jQ».
