RAILWAY ENQUIRY.
Christchuroh September 25. The Board of Appeal for railway workmen Rat. to-day to enquire in the suspfinsion of F^. Dflyis, a blacksmith, nr. the Ad 'in "ton workshops, who had p"tiHr>nerl the Minister for P.iblic Works for the enquiry. Davis alleged that his foreman, Patrick Pope, had abused, persecuted, and oppressed him ; hnd used threatening language to him ; and refused to listen to his complaints against other workmen! and had finally assaulted him
by catching him by the throat and pushing him violently upon some scrap iron. Pope denied the charges in toto. He alleged that Davis had refused to go on with his work, and told Pope to do it himself ; also that Davis had been insubordinate and abusive. He recommended that Davis be dismissed. Subsequently Davis was suspended by the workshops manager, and applied for the enquiry. After some evidence had been taken Davis requested Mr Rbtheram, the locomotive superintendant, to produce a certain document. Mr' Beethara," chairman of the Board, said he would refuse to go on with the enquiry as documents wore withheld. He at once adjourned the enquiry " sine die."
