NEW GUINEA,
Melbourne, July 24.
Sir Peter Scratchley, High Commissioner of New Guinea, asks the Victorian Government for the loan of £20,000 without interest for purposes of his administration, the amount to be repayable at some future time. Service has declined to increase the contribution already promised by Victoria until he has been fully apprised of the intentions of the Imperial Government in regard to New Guinea.
(Received July 24, at 10.30 p.m.) CASH BETTING ON RACECOURSES
The police authorities have announced their .determination to suppress cash betting on racecourses within this colony . This announcement has caused consider - able comment in sporting circles.
