The s.s. Herald left for Greymouth at -ten o'clock a.m/ on Saturday night, proceeding do\ratheharbor, and when four miles down was met by the Gairloch, from Waitara. Captain M'Arthur could see the Herald bearing down on. his vessel and reversed his engines, but too late, as -tKe'HeraldiSirmesfem^ bn^ihto the Gairloch's starboardTbow with a dreadful crashi dinting and 'cracking her plates nearly to ■ihi .water's edge, raising the forepastß Tieati;" and'straining the vessel, which .is making a good deal of water now.
