The 24 hours' walking match between Hancock, the English pedestrian, and Joe Scott of Dunedin, resulted in an easy win for Scott, who did 114 miles comfortably. Hancock gave "up at 100 miles when seven miles behind ; he was not in good health, suffering from boils, and walking in evident distress all the afternoon. He went off with a lead of a few laps, but in six hours Scott- passed him, Hancock kept up well for 12 hours, when they had done about 58 miles, with Hancock threequarters of a mile behind, but he fell off afterwards.
