THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY, MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 1885.

Oor remarks the other day on that portion of the Impounding Act which relates to goats haa been as a revelation to a few who have been persecuted by these animals for a longtime past. Old pistols and shot-guns have been taken down from their resting places and got ready for active service. Desperate threats are made that if there is not a sudden abatement of the goat nuisance a good many will not turn up at milking timo. One gentleman who for years has been put to considerable pecuniary loss through the depredations of goats, vows that if the owners of these animals will not take warning from the provisions of the Act, the substance of which has been given publicity tp, he will shoofc down every goat coming "upon his land. As the old saying has it that threatened lives live long, it is probable that these terrible threats will not be carried out to any great extent. Although the law permits the summary annihilation of these fourfooted pests when caught on cultivated ground where they have no right to be, still a great many will naturally enough be very reluctant to kill a neighbor's property, even when that property is the useful but much-detested goat. Threats, however, when they are so general, and are made so heartily, should not be disregarded ; and those who find it to their pleasure or profit to keep goats would do well to take into consideration the fate that will probably overtake them if allowed to wander at will as they have so long been accustomed to do, to poach wherever a tempting bite presents itself. The temptation offered by the Act, even when accompanied, as it is, by the troublesome condition that the slayer must give a written description of the animal killed, is so great that not a few will welcome it as the only swift and practical way that the difficulty can be met and overcome. There is very little doubt that a few battues such as are threatened would soon bring the difficulty within moderate dimensions.
