NELSON CREEK SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

- [XO THE EDITOR-. J Sir,— Air ordinary meeting of the above committee was held in the school room on the 7th inst. Present — Messrs Norris (chair), Philpott, Twopence, and Allan. ' -The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. . In reading the inward correspondence ' Mr Morris" complained that he got no answer from the teacher to explain how the school was closed for half a day. Mr Phil pott said he thought that the ' teacher gave ample explanation in his first letter as to how he had to close the school through illness. Besides this being the vacation, he thought they had no right to expect an answer. Mr Allan followed in the same strain 1 . Mr Morris was not satisfied, but would pass on for the present. "•.-■■ The Inspector's report of the examination was then gone through. I may here state tliat- the examination papers have already been before the public at a public meeting and criticised severely by Mr Morris. Now, a person would think that the examination papers should go before the committee first ; but no, they were discussed at the corners of the streets long before they were before the committee. At the public meeting Mr Morris appealed to the public to elect him for the committee again and he would dismiss the teacher. Such underhand low works as this, is characteristic of the man. To return to the proceedings of the committee, Mr Morris said the examination was a failure, and moved that the teacher.be requested to resign. Mr Twopence seconded the motion Messrs Allan and Philp'otts, in very strong language, objected to the motion. Being the last meeting, of the present committee it looked very- bad, and would be no credit J to them to pass such a motion. It should be left to the incoming committee. Mr Twopence said that although he seconded the motion he would not vote for it, as it would be bettar to leave the matter to the new committee. Mr Morris declared the motion carried. All the members present declared they would not vote for it, and no one called for a division. Mr Morris said if you pass this motion will do something this year; if not, "I will do nothing ; so I will close the books." Then, he called a special meeting for that night week to confirm the minutes. So thus ended the functions of one of the most extraordinary elective bodies that ever -*'as known in this district. ' Since writing the above, I find that Mr Morris has written to the teacher that he is authorised by the committee to request him to tender his resignation. It is to be hoped he will not do so under the circumstances. — lam, &c, Fair Play. January 18, 1884.
