The Times to-day announces that as a result of the recent conference at Sydney, the British Government will probably undertake the maritime defence of New Guinea. (Received January 22, at 1.5 a.m.) BARON MACLEAY RETURNS TO NEW GUINEA. January 21. It is announced that Baron Macleay, the New Guinea explorer, will return to New Guinea at an early date. COMMUNICATION WITH KHARTOUM RESTORED. Cairo, January 20. I Communication by telegraph with Khartoum was restored to-day, but no intelligence of importance has been received here from Soudan. M. DE GIERS AT VIENNA. Vienna, January 20. M. De Giers, Russian Foreign Minister, is now on a visit to this city. His Excellency received a cordial welcome on arrival, and fetes have been organised in his honor.
