THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. FRIDA Y, MARCH 19, 1880.

The Greymouth Autumn Meeting for ISBO may be pronounced one of the greatnst successes ever ran on the Greymouth course. The weather for both days aport was everything that could be desired, and nothing occurred to mar or damp the enjoyment. The races were well aud fairly contested, and for once everybody seemed satisfied. The races resulted in a surprise, as Mr Geo. Stevensonrepoated the coup with Satellite that he did with Guy Faux, and we are glad that Mr Stevenson has had a run of luck, as he has always been a constant visitor to Greymouth, and often with serious loss to himself. It is not often that an owner with three horses running is unable to enter one for the Consolation Stake?, yet such was the cas? at the present meeting, and we believe with only the exception of the hack, consolation, and hurdle rices, Mr Stevenson will taku away the whole of the money subscribed for the meeting. Hfin King and Banker ran unkindly— indeed the good oM King seemed to v* to run somewhat stiff, as if old age is beginning to tell upon Mr Clarke's horse, Just; pror to the start of the Forced Handicap SVellit ran against a lady upon the course and knocked her down, but we are happ\ to say she sustained no iDJury besides a slight shaking. The police arrangements made by Mr Inspector Feast were of a highly satisf ctorv character, but fortunately the the services <-f "the force" were not required on either days The bootholders have no occasion to regret th^ir venture, as they wore kept as bus as possible, and 'he returns well justified the speculation. The stewards) gave every aatr-f ictfon, and in only ono instance were their services required to settle any dispu l e The responsible office of starter was well filled by Mr Season, who got b s fields away capitally, and Mr C. Holder was "all there" as clerk of tho scales, satisfying both jockeys and owners. Mr F. Kent occupied the position of judge with his usual impartiality, and none of his decisions were impugned. We weie nearly forgetting our old friend, the secretary, Mr James Payne, who was loth busy and hippy, although we fancied there was a shade of regret on his face when it was all over, in consequence of the absence of old friend— Jupiter Pluvius. The long expected San Francisco mail arrived yesterday by the Kennedy. The Christy's Minstrels entertainment last evening war, if anything, an improyemeot on the previous night, as the performers seemed to have got over the usual sta«e nervousness n tural to first apperance. The various solos in the Christy's portion of the entertainment were nicely given, while the "St Patrick's Day Parade" was capitally given: The beautiful " Chloe Valse" was capitally repeated by the band, and everybody was delighted with it The burlesque of M BombastesFurios'>" was repeated, aud the success was greater than on the previous eyeing. as the performers were better up in their parts The King was ably played by Mr James, while Mr M'Tnto h wai im mense as Fusbos, and his singing of " Mil

Desperandum" necessitated a recall, as did also Mr Weekes' 1 Bombastes) remlorng of '•My Own bairey Ann." Mr Grogory played "the gentle Distaffina," as only Gregory could play it, while his make-up was immenae, the model chosen being cvi' deiit'y a well known Maori lady, and ith> reaemblance was ludicrously striking. The Christy's has been one of the greatest successes in Greymouth, and we hope to have tho pleasure of again hearing them. The annual inspection parade of the Greymouth Volunt ers will be held this evening, at the Volunteer Hall, when all meaibora must atteu" w th all Government property in their possession. Monday is the settling night of the Greymouth Jockey Club, at the Albion liotel. All accounts must be sent in to the Secretary before 6 o'clock to morrow evening. A fire, which was fortunately observed before nny serious consequences ensued took place at Mr Barnett's chemist, in rSeddon street, Kumara, oa Monday evening. It is supposed that a candle whi h was left burnin a room in the house, fell outof the candlestick, and the flame catching the paper, tho room was at once envoloped in fire. It was, however, soon noticed, and a good supply of water being to hand, the fire was quickly extinguished. Messrs J. W. Bain, E. Wakefield, and' W. Murray, M.H.R.'s aud Mr A. J. Burns, of Wescport, have been appointed members of the Commission to report on the question of local industries. Two others have yet to be appointed. A number of gentlemen tried a test experiment in preserving meatbyJamischaah's patent, which is to use a conserve salt. Meat packed into this salt at Berlin recently arrived, and when opened was found to be in splendid condition, and had the appearance of being fresh killed. It is said that fruit, milk, butter, fish, and game, can be just as easily preserved as meat, and the conserve salt is as cheap as salt. A movement is on foot amongst those interested. in the Illawarra district, to form a company for the purpose of establishing milk condensing works on a large scale. The intention is to raise a capital of LSOOO, and erect machinery capable of condensing 2000 gallons per day, yielding 542 dozen one pound tins.
