Christchtjech, August 1. Mr Bowen will again, stand for Kaiapoi and Mr Fisher for Heathcote. A meeting of the inhabitants of the Amuri district, north of the Hurunui, was held on Wednesday, when it was resolved to urge on the Minister of Public Works the construction of the railway to the West Coast by the Waiau route. An accident happened to a young man named John Smithers, employed on the Rakaia Railway. He was stooping to pick up a chain on the railway, when the en»ine struck him, breaking several of his ribs. Auckland, August 1. A midnight raid was made on the coal hulk Merina by Mr Brewer, of the Customs, and Detective Brennan, in search of contraband goods, but it was unsuccessful. Jame3 Edwards, lumper, while discharging railway iron from the Minister of Marine, was seriously injured. Wellington", August 1. A daring robbery was committed at Barrett's Hotel last night. One of the lodgers named M'Gregor retired to bed, and placed his pocket- book in a satchel on the bed. When he got up in the morning he found the satchel had been opened, and the money abstracted. The steam tug Lyttelton arrived yesterday for the purpose of undergoing repairs. A meeting of the creditors of Mitchell and Simmons, managers of the English Opera Troupe, was h- . !.l to-day, when some disclosures of a p; ;;uliar nature were made. The fire originated in j the kitchen.
