It was expected that a good daj's towing would have Veen done ytstercray, there being nine feet of water in the channel on Saturday, with every sU;ns of it improving, but at tide time yesterday, there was too hpav a sea on the bar to allow of anything crossing in its present precarious condition. The s s Graf ton showed up during the niaht, and waited till tide time, after which she steamed again for the north. The s.s Kennedy, with the San Francisco mails, arrived alongside the wharf on Satur- • day morning. She left Nelson on Thursday, reached Westport on Friday . ight, ltf • there on same tide, and arrive here as above. She sails for the north to-day. The s s Wallabi, with a full cargo of stock from Wanganui, arrived at the wharf on Saturday forenoon. Sue sails for Wanganui direct to-day. The s hooner Clio, in ballast from Nelsoß, was towed in by the p.s Dispatch on Saturday. The a. a Murray sailed -for Westport and Nelson on Saturday morning. The p.s Charles Edward passed this port, bound north, on Saturday. The following vessels are now in the roadstead : —Adieu, Wanganui, Spec, Sarah Pil>», Cleopatra, Spray, Minna Bell, and Nelson. The clipper schooner Alma has been laid on the berth for Melbourne, and will sail for thence to-morrow, bar permitting. She has good accommodation for passengers. In 1878 no fewer th».n 483 British ships and 25 foreign ships cleared from the Unite"d Kingdom to ports out of Europe, with respectively 105,811 and 4842 passengers. 172,242 British and 23,843 foreign seamen were employed in registered sailing and steam vessels of the United KiDgdom, not including river steamers, the percentage of foreigners being 13 45.
