AUCKLAND NEWS.
Auckland, March 29. It ia stated that the land tax for the Auckland Provincial district will not exceed L 16.000. The Piako Swamp Company and 3 . C. Firth are the largest contributors. The Hinemoa left for Wellington with the Premier, Mr and Mrs Seymour George, and Private Secretary. The Premier visited Mokihenui Island to ascertain its fitness as a site for a lighthonse for the Hauraki Gulf for vessels from Australia or the United States. At the annual meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association, T. Hawkins was elected president. The reports stated the result of Dr Somerville's efforts to be LlO2l. At the Volunteer inspection, Major Morrow complained that the rifles served out to the Auckland volunteers were not Government tested, and inferior, and in consequence they could not issue friendly challenges to the Southern volunteers. Colonel Packe promised enquiry and redress.
