NOTICE TO MARINERS. Marine Department, Wellington, 10th March, 1879 The following notice to mariners, received from the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, is published for general information. G. Geey. Norts Coast of Tasmania. —Shoal Eastward of Petrel Island. Captain Hugheß, of the schooner Eva, reports that, wnen he was stinding to the westward for the anchorage, east of Petrel Island, he observed the three-fathom shoal marked on the chart, and shaped his coarse to pass to leeward of it (wind 8.8. W.). When due north of the shoal, and at a distance of about a quarter of a mile from it, the centre-board of the Eva touched the ground in 10ft of water, chart giving 4£ fathoms. Captain Hughes is of opinion there is not more that 6ft water on the shoal marked three fathoms, and that the shoal is extending to tbe northward. Charles B. Payne, Chief Harbormaster.
