A number of the men employed on tho public works having been discharged last week, and others having receivednoticot.bat they would be discharged, a deputation of their -umber waited on the County Chair • man yesterday asking if free passages by the Government steamer Stella could be pro cured for them to Wellington. Mr Guinness said that although out of his province, he would do what he could for the men, bat suggested that Mr Jobnstone, who was ia charge of the woiks, should be first interviewed. Mr -Tohnstone, on arrival, stated various ieasons for the dismissal of the men, amongst the number that one of the locomotives being out of repair, the quarry could not be worked to advantage, but that he wouid try and find work it once for twenty of the married men discharged, and when Mr O'Connor arrived — which he expected that evening — he had no doubt employment would be found for more: The County Chairman during the day telegraphed to Mr Patten, Collector of Customs, tiokitika, asking if from his instructions passages could be granted from Greymouth, per Stella, as a number of unemployed had applied. Mr Patten replied- -"lnstructions only refer to Hokitika. Apply to Undersecretary." Mr Guinness then telegraphed to the Under- Secretary as follows: — "A number of unemployed wish to know whether they can obtain passages per Stella from Greymouth. As Mr Patten's instructions only apply to Hokitika, will Government grant passages from Greymouth also ?" Mr H. J. H. Elliott, Under-Secretary, sent the following reply: — "Unemployed can I have passages from Hokitika if they obtain certificates from you, Stella cannot call at Greymouth." The adjourned meeting of the Alexandra Gold Mining Company was held at the office of the Company last night, Mr F. Camp' ell in the chair. A letter was read from the legal manager of the Fiery Cross Company accept ng the offer and terms of the Alexandra Company re amalgamation, subject to t*e approval of the shareholders of the Fiery Cross. The letting of one of the tunnels to the Welcome Company for 12 months was agreed to under certain conditions. Several matters were referred to the directory to take action on, and the meeting adjourned. ** the Resident Magistrate Court yesterday, before w . H - li ev e ll, Esq. B» m m w illiara Walker, a y Oun S man who has J u st bfien liberated after serving nine months in FTokitika Jail for theft in Kumara, was charged on remand with the larceny of a xsair of boots and handkerchief from the house of John Ryan, miner, South Beach on the 16th March. The evidence disclosed that the accused had coolly gone to the house of Ryan while he was absent, and appropriated the fir&t thine he could lay his hands on, which were a pair of boots which had been bought the previous day, and a handkerchief to put them in, ani had marched off with them, and, when arrested, had the m'ssing boots on his feet and the handkerchief in his pocket. Prisoner said he had purchased the boots in Hokitika. but the j evidence was too strong against him, and he 1 was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor. The adjourned meeting of the Kaitangata Relief Fund Committee will be held at the Fire Brigade Hall this evening, at 8 o'clock. ! In another part of this paper appears the preliminary notice of the sale of a portion of the celebrated Waimate Plains, situated between the Patea River and New Plymouth, the land of which is considered unequalled and certainly unsurpassed in New Zealand for fertility. It was confiscated at the close of the Waikato war from ihe JN'gatirunanui tribe, for whom, however, larae reserves hive been made. The land is well watered, and situated on the main line of railway from Wanganui to New Plymouth. Fuller particulars will be published before the day of sale. Messrs (xirdwood, Lahman, and Co com^ menco to-day the sale of C. Holder and Go's extensive stock of builders' ironmongery, tools, and building materials, on the premises, Maekay street. Messrs Nancarrow and Co will sell by auction this day, on the premises of Mr Samuel TTill, Grey Valley main road,?dairy stock, horses, utensils, &c. Telegrams in another column would seem to indicate that the Natives will not allow the peaceful occupation of the Waimate Plains. When such men as Titokowaoi are amongst the malcontents, mischief is meant. His Lordship Bishop Redwood has not arrived at Hokitika as was expected. Mr Blair, Enaineer-in-Ohief, telegraphed from Christchurch on Tuesday to the County Chairman of Westland to say he would be most happy to meet the public bodies of Westland on the question of route for the East and West Coast Railway, on his arrival in Hokitika, The interview was to take place last evening at eight p.m at the County Council Chambers. It is notified that the Greenstone Agency of the Bank of New Zealand will \hs closed on Monday, April 7th proximo, after which date deposits will be paid and other business conducted at the Bank of New Zealand, Kumara. An accident occurred to the mail coach from Hokitika to Kumar* on Tuesday morning. Ie appears that shortly after leaving Goldsborough, and when on the new road, in turning a sharp corner, the coach came into collision with a horae and wood cart which was going in the opnosite direction. The mail coach was capsized, and the horses broke away with tbe fore-carriage, smashing the pole and otherwise damaging the vehicle and harness The driver was thrown out, but stuck to the ribbons manfully, and after being dravrged some distance with his horses he succeeded in again controlling them. The passengers who were inside escaped injury, with the exception of Mrs Ryan and her children, who re eived some severe cuts and bruises, and Sergeant St c vnson, of the police, whose kneecap was severely bruised. The driver having borrowed, another cirfc, brought on his mails at once, arriving here shortly after the usual hour. There is more than me°ts the eve (says the London Truth) in a recent marriage. The brido, who, by-the-bye, was married under her real name, although she bore another, was the divorcee of a corporal in the Guards, from whom she was disjoined in 1875. The bridegroom i 3 a youth fresh from college, the master of an enormous allowance from trustees, and tbe future master of a still more enormous fortune, and before this strange step was supoosed to be a lad, quiet, refined, and with High Church proclivities. Love alone, one would have supposed, would have brought the two together, but love does not seem to have been tbe cause of the marriage, for the bridegroom resides at an hotel, and the bride at her house. A mysterious being, who appears to exercise a wonderoua influence over the bridegroom, and who is supposed to be * corporal in the Life Guards, frequently visits him, arrayed in civilian garb, and it is said that bills for a large amount have been put into circulation, although where the proceeds have gone is not clear. Under these circumstances, we should advise tbe trustees of the bridegroom's fortune, who receive a large annual salary for looking after his affairs, to investigate the mysteries of this extraordinary marriage. The new alluvial diggings near Reeftin continue to attract attention, and fresh claims have been marked off.
