THE KUMARA TRAMWAY.
The following is the text of a petition signed by 1040 residents at Kumara in support of the Greymouth and Kumar'a Tramway, and forwarded to the Minister of Public Works ; — ; 1. That the above tramway will be of great benefit to the storekeepers, miners', and other 3, and the community in general in providing an efficient means of transport between the Kumara and Greymouth. i 2. That it will lessen the cost of conveyance of goods, which is a heavy tax upon your petitioners, as the present road is 22 miles in length, and over hills 800 ft high, whereas the tramway will only be 14 miles in length, and nearly a perfect level. ; 3. That it will be the means of opening up a largely extent of auriferous Country hitherto qn tried and almost unknown. ; 4. That it will be the means of employing a large quantity of labor in the formation of it. j Your petitioners therefore pray that the Government will take such steps as to allow the above Tramway to proceed, as the stoppage thereof is a great loss to the inhabitants of Kumara and adjacent districts. ; ;
