Christchukch. —The ' ' Ly ttelton Times " of Saturday last :— The nominal value of first-class samples of wheat still stands at 5s ; inferior qualities 4s 9d. Oats are scarce and in demand at 5s 3d to 5s 6d. There is no malting barley in the market ; feeding qualities are in demand. Rye grass is in some demand at 4s 6d to 4s j 9d. Millers' stocks are low, their quotations being .-—Flour,. Ll2 to Ll3 (with JOs extra f.o.b. in port). Bran and pollard, L 6; fine sharps, L 7. Butter comes very slowly forward at lid to Is, the requirements of the retail trade having of late been so largely increased, as ajnecessary result of the increasing (population by immigration. Cheese is enother article which is in short supply ; we repeat our last week's quotation of 7d for old samples. For bacon and hams, there is a strong outside demand. We quote as follows : — Bacon and hams, ll£d in cloth ; hams only, do, Is ; bacon only, do, Ud, f.o.b. in Lyttelton. Potatoes are in exceedingly limited supply at L 2 to L 9 10s. At the yards on Wednesday, there was a very large entry ' of stock, with a full attendance' of buyers, and, except in some classes of sheep, the biddings were spirited. In sheep, last week's prices were barely maintained, the trade, no doubt, not c <ring to lay in large stocks with the present appearance of a plentiful supply : coming forward soon, but still prices are high, and we do not alter our quotation of 5d per lb for sheep in the wool, and for shorn sheep 4d per lb for best quality ; lambs reach up to 10s, but as yet there is no great demand for them. Store sheep are coming forwatd more plentifully, and the demand is scarcely so brisk for this class of sheep as it has been lately. Amongst the cattle yaided, there was a fair sprinkling ot good beef, and all sold at full rates Light weights of prime quality maintained 4i)s per 1001 b; mflriinm alraut 30s per lOOib. All store cattle offered are readily brought up at high rates, in fact, it is now becoming very evident that the present supply of cattle in the country is inadequate to the demand.
