PAROA DISTRICT.

[PEOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] October 16. Some of the claims at Revell's Terrace, Greenstone, are said to be paying more than ordinarilly well. There are several tunnels being constructed which will take some time before they are completed, as they will be of considerable length. Business at the township has very much increased since the commencement of the rush. Hopes are entertained that the Provincial Government will cause the road to Lake Brunner, that is now being made by the General Government, to be widened so as to be used as a dray road. It is a work of the utmost importance to the Grey district, and its value cannot well be over estimated. It would shorten the distance some twenty-five miles between Greymouth and Christchurch, open up the Lake Brunner country for settlement, and be the means of causing a plentiful supply of fish which are said to abound in the lake ; no small argument just now when meat is almost at famine prices. There has been several inquiries of late as to the likelihood of the Hohonu Waterrace being extended to the diggings round Marsdea. It will be remembered that the Provincial Council ordered a survey to be made between Greenstone and Marsden for the. purpose of extending this race, and people are now anxious about the result, and whether that desirable object is likely to be carried out. The weather lately has been extremely wet and boisteious, so much so that even sluicecs complain of its inclemency, whilst it entirely prohibits any prospecting by others. An accident of a very serious nature occurred last Friday morning to Mr James, of Rutherglen. It appears that whilst he and his mate were working at their claim on James's Terraca, at the top of the Infant's Creek, near Rutherglen, some ot the surface came down and fell on him, causing the unfortunate man to be severely injured. He was at once carried to his home at Rutherglen and carefully attended to. It is feared, however, that he will have to be taken to the Hospital, and the only hope is that he will soon recover. Apropos of the Hospital, it is the general opinion that the Committbe in Greymouth ought to make such arrangements that when an accident occurs in the country to those having homes, and particularly married men, that the surgeon should attend them at their homes on payment of ordinary expenses for horse-hire. If an accident occurs to a married man he must either dull out the exorbitant sum of LTO, or go to the Hospital. Certainly ihe Committee might make some arrangements to meet cases of this kind.
