THE ELECTION FOR THE WEST WARD.

[to the editor.] Sir, — With reference to a paragraph in the Argus and " Evenirg Star" of this date, stating that Mr Wickes will not be present at the Borough election, in consequence of being absent on public business'at Wellington, I beg to state for the information of the ratepayers that Mr Wickes left here for Auckland on his own private business and did not intend to be here on the dayof the election. Mr Wickes would have left on the Monday previous to the departure of the deputation, had the weather permitted, but being detained until they were leaving he joined ihem as far as Wellington, and was to take his departure from thence to Auckland, so he i will not, nor did he intend to be, present at the election. In fact, the gentleman in question, appeared to be quite indifferent as to which Ward he represented, as he signed two (2) nomination papers previous to his leaving. I beg the electors of the West Ward will not be gulled by the untruth which has been expressed iv both papers, and which I am prepared to proof. I am, &c, Ratepayer. September 8. P.S.— Mr Wickes is duly bound to be absent three months out of the twelve at the Provincial Council of Westland, and lam also led to understand that he is aspiring for a seat in General Assembly. In event of him succeeding in obtaining a seat, I should like to know how he is to represent West Ward of the Borough of Greymouth. Ratepayer.
