AUSTRALIAN SPORTING NOTES.

[MELBOURNE ARGUS.] Sydney, Aug. 26. Arrow and Horatio are the best favorites for the Metropolitan at 5 to 1 each ; Goldsborough at 6to 1. Tait took 500 to 25 that he wins the Metropolitan and the Cup with Goldsborough ; 2000 to 240 was taken about FitzYattendon ; 2000 to 100 about Reprieve ; 1000 to 50, Sunlight. Poodle and Stirling are at 10 to 1 each ; Dagworth, 12 to 1 ; Rory O'More, 16 to 1 ; most of others, 20 to 1. Speculation has been on the course for the past three days. August 27. The weather this morning was remarkably fine, and the horses were at work very early. Monica and Hybla were the first to appear, both going a smart gallop. Lady Brownlow and Dick did strong work. Rose dA m our had a steady canter, and finished with a sharp spin home. Dagworth went once round at a steady canter, and then had another turn at a Btrong pace. Horatio was worked with the sweating clothes on. Nina and Lord Lyon were Bent twice round, the last round at a fast pace. Tait's Barb colt cantered; Javelin and Westminster did some nice work, with a fast gallop home. A. T. and Gladstone had a mile and half at a strong pace. Goldsborough and Arrow cantered to the Derby corner, T^tiere Melbonrne joined in, but they disappointed the touts, as they only went at a steady pace for a mile and a half. They spurted up the straight running, Arrow and Goldsborough going very freßh. Reprieve had a fine striding gallop of two miles. Hussy, Buckingham, Mentor, and Shakspeare all did good work. Harding's string had some useful galloping, Bory O'More having much the best of the spurt Tip the straight at the finish. Nea and Neredah had a steady gallop, finishing up with a fast spurt. Newbold had steady work, Lancer bringing him fast. Zetland and Kingsborough went twice round together at a steady pace. Gameboy and Poodle did similar work. Cento, New Holland, Corisande, De Mestre's two-year-olds, Richmond, Speculation, FitzYattendon, Syren, Hyperion, Barbara, Prior, Gratis, and Misnomer had steady work. The favorite is easier for the Metropolitan. Goldsborough is advancing in public estimation. The Arrow has receded to Bto 1. This afternoon Rory O'More and Maid of Avenel had a trial, in which the former had slightly the best of it, but the time made was only moderate. I doubt the ability of Rory O'More to win the Metropolitan. August 28. The New Zealand mare Calumny has arrived, and it is reported that Lurline may start for the Metropolitan., There are 38 nominations for TattersalFs Two-year-old Stakes. Speculation was out this morning, and cantered slowly, but goes tenderly. The probable starters for the Metropolitan .are — Dagworth, Reprieve, Javelin, Horatio, Goldsbrough, Poodle, Fitz-Yattendon, The Arrow, Westminister, The Prophet, Stirling, Rory O'More, Crazy Jane, Syren, Wombo, Sunlight, Myrtle, Viva, King of the West, Ladybird, Champagne, and, if all right, Rose and Speculation. 100 to 16 offered on the field to-day. Considering that it was Friday morning, a fair amount of work was done. Doubtful went steadily twice round. A.T. and Gladstone a striding gallop, coming home in capital style. Neredah, Nea, Syren, Fitz-Yattendon, Kingsborough all did steady work ; the last-named has not been out of a canter hardly since the Hawkesbury Meeting. Newbold can tered for two miles, and was then joined by Lancer, and came home at a fast pace. Loyal Devoir shaped well in his gallop with Washed Ashore. Duffer, Ptarmigan, and Morris did their work, Hyperion and Barbara had several canters, and Adventurer did his usual work. Myrtle made her first appearance on the course since lier arrival from the country. She went at a steady pace with Eros. Ni&htlight and the Sylvia colt cantered to the Derby corner, and then spurted up the straight, both going well. The Fly colt and Timothy did similar work. Horatio had a sweat, coming home fast. King of the West did steady work, and Prodigious sweated. During the week Speculation has done little or no work. Neither Latnond nor the veterinary surgeonß can make out his ailment. The horse is well one day, and lame the next. ITcotn what I have seen I fchiakfcfce Metropolitan an open race. The Arrow, Groldsforough, floratio, Dagwortb, Poodle, Sterling, and Fitz-Yattendon have all good ahowa. When the weights Brat appeared I selected The Arrow, and should he.g© on well B^all stick to him. Poodle goes, very strong, and his party fancy him very much. Kingsborough cannot be .beaten for the Derby unless by «*«cident. Betting. — The Metropolitan — 6 v> 1 against Goldsbrough and Horatio, 8 io\ The Arrow and Fitz-Yattendon, 12 to] Sterling and Dagworth, 15 to 20 to 1 the others. For the Epsom Handicap I fancj Poodle, Maid of Avenel, and King of th< West. , The same papei tf the 29th inst, hai the following «— lt woa very generally re

ported in town yesterday that the celebra ted colt Goldsbrough had been disposed of for a large sum, and that he would be ar< unlikely starter for the Metropolitan. This horse has lately been advanced to the position of first favorite for til 1 ! Metropolitan, and the best price to be go* about him yesterday morning was 5 to ] The rumor of his being sold bad the effeit of putting a stop to all further specula tion on him, but the bookmakers did not relax their terms, and he still stands at at the head of the list at sto 1 . Horatio has receded a a little, and 6 to 1 is offered about him. Ihe Arrow is nominally at 10 to-1, but very little money could be got about him at that price. The price said to be given for Goldsbrough is L3OOO.
