ROSS MINING NEWS.

The following items of mining news from the Tofcara district, appear in the Rqss:Giiardian of the 4th instant :—

On Jones's Flat the Scotia Wheel Company are opening out a large face about 35ft from the surface on the first bottom. Although the claim has so recently started it is paying ' yery" well at present, biifrjs expected to do far better as deeper ground ia got, on account of three bottoms being -so close together in this part of "tEe Flat. On an average 250 truck Joads. of _dirt_ar;e brought up the incline daily. There are four working in the paddock, one on top, and another at the sluice-box. The wheel uses one head of water, and after being used as a motive power is again called into requisition for washing. The wheel is perhaps about the most perfect in the disttict-^-the iron work. b.eirig the same as was formerly on the Will arid the Way wheel at Sailor's. There is a patent clutch attached to' the cylinder, found whidli-the chain winds which draws up the r trucks, aud by it the machinery can be thrown out of gear in a moment. The tail-race is a: very long one, arid 'contains 100 ft of boxes.— At the old Whim Wheel Company there is now a very large race opened in the paddock to a depth of about f6oft. The weather is causing slips, arid entailing a lot of inconvenience. There, • are the same number of men employed as at the Scotia, aud the chim.is paying . better than any on the Flat.— At the; Turbine Wheel Claim there are four, Chinamen employed in the paddock, on tribute ; a certain price being given for every 100 truck loads of dirt., The face is about 40ft deep at present, and will be carried down to 60ft. The- dividends are not very large at: present; but better ones are looked for. Mr Montensori attends td the turbine and top workj and a man is employed to: wheel away the tailings:— ln the Excelsior claim there are five men at work, whdiSre; meeting with only-mode-rate success.— Hunter and Petersen.are still doing very well ; but their claim' will have to be given up shortly, it being included in the area, of the .Scotia's lease. — A share was sold in"" Gordon's sluicing claim during the week. - Mr Dan. Robinson, whobasgoneto Nelson :Creek, sold 'a fourth interest to Mr Hans Olsen.— Peter Johnston and patty "are 'doing well in their extended claim in Jones's Creek.— Of the other claims there is nothing of interest to note. , , .
