[Anglo-australian pkess telegraph AGENCY.] I Auckland, Feb. 17. The Hero has arrived. She left Sydney on the 9th, and brings one day's 1 later English news. Newcastle, Feb. 9. A man named Willcox was drowned on the beach behind the hospital. He had : been a patient, and it is supposed com- | mitted suicide whilst laboring under temporary insanity. Melbourne, Feb. 9. The anticipated Border revenue will be very small for the next Bix months, as the squatters of Riverina are fully supplied. Captain Stanley, Admiralty Surveyor, reports that great changes are taking place jn the West Channel.

A splendid shipment of valuable grey hounds has arrived. Sydney, Feb. 9. At the cricket match, English Eleven against Australian combined fifteen, in the second innings the English Eleven made the splendid total of 236 runs, and the Australians only 90; the English winning by 217 runs to spare. A crowd crossed the ground, coming in front of the pavilion, and gave cheers for the players, both English and Colonial. As the English visitors were leaving at 10 p.m. for Melbourne a large number of personal friends assembled at the Metropolitan Hotel, where they were staying, and wished them God-speed in brimming ciips until the time came for going on board. Tasmania, Feb. 9. Dr Valentine applied for a mandamuß to compel the Bishop to prosecute the Rev. Barkway for ritualistic practices. The Court took, time to consider. A hundred and ten men will be tried for riots. Adelaide, Feb. 9. The Evangelical alliance set apart Sunday, the 15th February, for a harvest thanksgiving service. The last exports of breadstuff's amount to 3000 tons. Dr Schomburg shipped a quantity of blue gum plants for the Northern Territory, being a specific for fever. Wheat sales, 63 ; market unsettled. London, Feb. 7. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, with several members cf the Russian Court, have arrived at Moscow. The German Parliament has been opened by an Imperial speech, and expresses confidence in the efforts of the Great Powers to maintain peace. Alderman Cotton, Messrs Hubbard. Turls (Conservatives), and the Right Hon. G. I. Goschen (Liberal) have been elected for the City of London. Two Conservatives have been returned for Westminster. For the Electorates of Chelsea, Marylebone, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets, Messrs Ayton, Fawcett, and Jacob Bright have been defeated ; Messrs Thomas and Hughes retired. Mr Roebuck has been re-elected for j Sheffield, and the Marquis of Hartington re-elected for Radnor. Out of 430 members returned, the Coni servatives gain 61 seats. The Liberals ousted twenty-four Conservatives. There have been elected 229 Liberals. The latter gain 27 seats, but the Conservatives have secured 71 seats from the Liberals. It is asserted that Gladstone has resigned.
