In consequence of a protest from the American Consul and the objection of the passengers by the Mikado, Captain Moore refused to take the murderer Sullivan to San Francisco, and turned him off the ship at Auckland. Great indignation has been felt here in consequence of his liberation, and the proposal to ship him to America was condemned by all the papers. The Mikado leaves at four o'clock this afternoon. Blenheim, Feb. 16. The Assembly Rooms and sproe adjacent stables were destroyed by fire this morning. Wellington, Feb. 16. The Luna left on Saturday night for a trip round the Islands to discover eligible sites for proposed new lighthouses. She proceeds first to Cape Campbell, Godley Head, Timaru, Otago Heads, and Stewart's Island. She is going up the West Coast. She will touch at SouthWest Cape, where it is proposed to erect a lighthouse, and then proceed to Greymouth to coal. Visits Westporfc after that, when she will be detained while a party
proceeds to Cape Foulwind, where a lighthouse site is now being cleared, and then return to Wellington. The suspension of the Provincial Auditor is causing considerable inconvenience through stopping Provincial Treasury payments. . Naphsr, Feb. 16. The carpenters have struck for 12s a day, and the erection of several hotels and other buildings has been brought to a standstill. . v ; Invercargul, Feb. 14. The first section of the Invercargill and Mataura railway, twelve miles in length, was formally handed over by Messrs Brogden and Co., contractors, to the Government to-day. An excursion trdn carried 600 persons to Woodlands, where luncheon was provided by Messrs Brogden. Mr Weld, Governor of Western Australia, was a passenger by the train, and was present at the luncheon. The weather was magnificent. : Hokitika, Feb. 16. The Titan floated on this morning's tide, and is ; no win the river. A man named Thomas Davis, while loading the. Cleopatra, slipped off the wharf and was drowned. The body has not been found.
