OKARITO.

[from a correspondent. J January 7. Since my last another fine young man has lost his life in attempting to ford the Waterau on his way <?own to Okarito. This happened on the -ame day, I think, that the public were attending the funeral of the packer that lost his life at the Three-mile Bluff, and w.a'. is a singular fact, it was this same young man's mate' that lost his life in Cook's River some few months ago. Alexander Bell was his name, aged about 21 years. Other two mates were in his company, but could do nothing for him. They had a real hairbreadth escape for their own lives. Such often and repeated warnings si ould make peopKuße great caution in crossing dan-i gerous swollen! rivers. His body has not been recovered yet, nor is it thought likely it will be by those that kno.v a little of the country. ! I hear that the diggers hare been nearly starved out up on the diggings alluded to, the danger being so great of late in getting there. As to the quantity of gold getting there I have he«rd nothing. of late that I can trust to. Alter much hard, work; tsorae of the parties up the Amerpu have left all behind them ; others have not, up to date, finished their races, &c, to give their ground a trial. ,
