ARRIVAL OF THE ALHAMBRA. THE ASHANTEE EXPEDITION. THE ROYAL MARRIAGE. [Anglo-australian press telegraph AGENCY.] Bluff, Jan. 12. The Alhambra left Melbourne at 5 p.m. on the 3rd, arrived at Milford Sound on the Bth at 6 p.m., left on the 10th at 6 p.m. , and arrived at the Bluff: at 7 p. m. on the 11th. She brings 55 saloon and 40 steerage passengers, and 250 tons of cargo for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at 3 p.m. to-day. London, Dec. 29. The Duke of Edinburgh has started for St. Petersburg for his marriage next month. The Archbishop of Canterbury will perform the marriage of the Duke of Edinburgh. A distinguished party is proceeding there. Edward Miall intends retiring from Parliament on the dissolution, owing to ill health. The Rev Ward Beecher is expected in London. Paris, Dec. 29. The survivors of the Virginius expedition who were released have arrived at New York. December 30. The Virginius, whilst being towed to New York, foundered off Cape Clear. Prussia, Dec. 30. The Prussian Order of Merit has been conferred on Thomas Carlyle. Madrid, Dec. 30. There is a political crisis at Madrid. London, Dec. 31. The fall in the price of coal continues. Cape Coast advices to the 15th December state that General Wolseley with 500 sailors and marines had advanced 70 miles towards the Prah River pursuing the Ashantees. January 1. The steamship Somersetshire put into Valparaiso to repair damages received during a gale. The vexed question of opening School Board meetings with prayer has been reopened. The .Lancet thinks that the polluted air of the Courtis telling on the health of the jurymen in the Tichborne case. Eight lives were sacrificed at Lambeth through preparations for Guy Fawkes's day. The Russian Government has presented the town of Sheffield with a collection of continental cutlery. Abd el Kadir has died, aged 70. The order of the Red Eagle has been conferred on Dr Dollinger by the Emperor of Germany. The Prussian Government is organising a flotilla of light draught ironclads for the defence of the Rhine. New York papers fear that the coming winter will be the hardest ever experienced. Retrenchment is the universal watchword. Thousands of seamstresses and servants have been thrown nut of employment. The exports to New Zealand for the month amount to L 399,100.
