THE Grey River Argus PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1874.
..■.,-. . , . #?*-■ The telegram which we publish elsewhere as to the result of the action brought by the Hokitika and Greymouth Tramway Company against the County Council of Westland is not of a nature calculated to awaken very pleasurable emotions amongst the residents of this district. Fifteen thousand pounds damages, subject to a possible reduction to five thousand four hundred. Here indeed is a pretty task 'quickly provided . for his Honor the .Superintendent and the Council of our new Province to exercise their ingenuity upon ! One thing is quite certain : there is no money in the Provincial exchequer which can be applied to the payment of this liability, even supposing it it ultimately reduced to the lowest amount. Tj|e next 'step, therefore, which may be expected, will be the levying of execution, xinless indeed the judgment creditors, should, in their clemency, consent not to press the matter too hardly, and let their little bill stand over a while. Failing thisj however, there seems to be no other resort than for Mr Bon ar to repeat the .experirnenpt of Mr Hoos, and forward a • f Life or riiohey" demand upon the Colonial Treasurer, subsequently following it up 'himself in the guise of a humble suppHcant, clad in sackcloth, and; no doubt r-Mr Hoos will give him a wrinkle as to the right way to succeed in getting the Government to accede to his prayer.
